The first round of the UCI Track Nations Cup will be held April 21-24 at the Sir Chris Howe Velodrome in Glasgow. The event marks the beginning of a new chapter as Ireland’s track cyclists return to the top-tier competition and continue their preparation. The European Championships in Munich in October and the World Championships in Paris. Ensuring berths at the 2022 World Track Championships will be a major goal this season as athletes gain the opportunity to gain experience ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Glasgow will represent Ireland in the UCI Track Nations Cup Emily K., Alice Sharp, My Griffin, Kelly Murphy And JB Murphy Competing in a range of endurance events. Connor Rowley The Irish cycling team has confirmed its first call and will compete in the Kerin and Sprint event in Glasgow.
A new name to many, Rowley, of Australian descent, qualified to travel to Ireland through his mother, Geraldine McNamara, who came from Kilrash in County Clare and moved to Australia in the twenties. Rowley, who is a former junior world champion in 24-year-old Kairin today (Thursday) and has been traveling around Europe and Australia in support of his family for the past 12 months, has demonstrated his skills at the senior elite level.
Rowley traveled to Dublin for the Track National Championships in August last year after an extended period of lockdown in Australia. He then moved to Palma to further his training and achieved a number of notable results in Europe, including 2nd and 5th at Portugal’s Tropheu Internationale de Pistachio and 4th and 5th at Barcelona’s Trophiu Internacional de Pistachio. Rowley took it a step further in February when he recorded a time of 9.969 in the Flying 200 at the Victorian State Championships and finished top 10 in the UCI Class 2 level competition.
Connor Rowley commented on his election:
“I am very proud and excited to have the opportunity to represent Ireland for the first time at the Nations Cup in Glasgow.
“Since my mother was Irish and traveled to Ireland many times when I was growing up, I always felt connected to Ireland and longed to represent Ireland on the big stage one day. It was incredible to see how excited my mother was to hear that I was going to represent Ireland, and I can’t wait for her to see me race the Irish kit. “
“So many years of hard work and dedication have reached this stage and it is incredibly exciting to finally be given a chance at this level.”
Newly appointed High-Performance Director Ian Dyer says:
“The whole team is looking forward to the Glasgow Nations Cup. After an unusually cowardly season last year, it looks like we’re all finally starting the new look UCI track season. ”
“Glasgow is always a great event, so it’s good to start with that because we aim to advance to the European Championships in Munich in August and the World Championships in Paris in October.”
The riders will use the Glasgow Class 1 Belgium Open Track Meeting in preparation for Glasgow, and will be joined by Kerin and sprint event specialist Orla Walsh. Walsh has set several new Irish records outside of the 2021 Track National Championships in Sundrive and spent time preparing for the 2022 season at the UCI World Cycling Center in Switzerland.
